Former Mayor of Tema, David Annan, has expressed deep concern over the deterioration of the Tema Children’s Park, warning that private interests are undermining the original purpose of the public space. Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, he lamented the current state of neglect at the once vibrant facility, which was designed to meet the social and educational needs of residents, especially children. The Tema Children’s Park, which sits on 1.7 acres of land, was originally established as a recreational and educational hub. It houses the only operational public library in the area and has served for decades as a vital space for outdoor activities and learning. But Mr. Annan noted that “Our challenge is that private interest is overriding the public interest with which the area was reserved.” “When private individuals enter, the place will be developed, yes—but not for the purpose it was intended. It becomes concrete, not green.” He further noted that while serving as mayor, several proposals were brought to him regarding the redevelopment of the space, but most, he said, were commercial in nature and did not align with the park’s intended function. “Tema was built with spaces deliberately left for outdoor events and public use. The 31st December Movement added sculptures, and the park was actively used. But now, it’s been abandoned and overtaken by interests that do not value its heritage,” he said. Mr. Annan stressed the importance of preserving Tema’s green belts and criticised the growing trend of turning community parks and open spaces into concrete infrastructure. “All the plans I’ve seen so far are focused on concrete. I love greenery; I have it around me, and I believe it’s something we must protect. This is how we’ve lost many green belts in Tema,” he warned. He called on local authorities and city planners to resist pressures from private developers and restore the park to its original purpose for the benefit of future generations.
